About Barbra French

Barbra French (BA, MFA) is a director, playwright and educator who has been teaching and coaching actors since 1999. She received her undergraduate degree in Theatre from the University of British Columbia and her master’s degree in Directing at the University of Alberta. She has directed dozens of plays, co-created seven full-length, devised works, and was the founder and Artistic Director of several companies.

Earlier in her teaching career, Barbra found that neutral scenes were a highly effective tool to help actors truly understand the basics, but she was frustrated by scenes that were little more than contradiction or word play.  That’s when she decided to write her own neutral scenes and workshop them with actors to make sure they were classroom tested and ready for any drama teacher to use. Moments is the result. She is currently writing a step-by-step companion book entitled Mastering the Moment, that will help acting teachers and coaches design and teach their courses, and will be released in 2026.

Barbra lives on the West Coast with her husband, Greg, and their rescue dog, Tucker.
